Fertilizer Cakes Question
This is primarily for BonsaiAl1. . .I read in a different post that you can use Bone Meal, Blood Meal, Fish Emulsion, and of course water to create Fertilizer Cakes. I'm curious as too how much of each you use, as I would like to try and make some of my own using that mix. Please get back at me here, thanks!!
If anybody else knows of any other mixes for making fertilizer cakes, I'd like to know them as well. Thank you very much. |

The actual quantity of dry ingrediants does not really matter. You could also add cotton seed meal or rape seed meal. If you used all four just make the ratio 25/25/25/25 or if you used 3 the ratio would be 33/33/33. Pretty simple. The amounts could be cups, quarts, pounds, or ounces. You just add enough water to make pancake batter.
Let it set for two weeks to ferment. You don't have to do this step, but the fermentation process begins to break down the organics into usable chemicals for the plant to use. Organic fertilizer does not work straight away when you add it to the soil. It takes a few weeks for bacteria and bugs to break down the fertilizer. That's what the fermentation process does. But you can place the bucket somewhere besides below your bedroom window, because this stuff can get pretty vile smelling. If you go to the fertilizer forum, there are two more recipes posted there by Matt, from members of various clubs in the bay area. Most of the dry ingredients come in five pound containers. You could use that for your measurments. Five pounds of each item and water and fish emulsion. The amount of emulsion is not crucial either. Just add a couple ounces, maybe a cup. I have a pretty cool mold thing that I use. I havn't made fertilizer cakes in a long time, but this is what I did and it works swell: I went to the hardware store and bought one of those white plastic eggcrate thingys that go into a 4'x2' lightwell. I think they call them light diffusers. I just place this on a foil covered piece of plywood, and fill it flush with the sludge. When the fertilizer dries, it shrinks a little and pulls away from the plastic. I pick it up and what doesn't fall out, can be knocked out with a good rap on the table at a 45 degree angle. Voila! you have perfect 1/2x1/2x1/2 fertilizer cubes. I was going to patent the idea, but they kicked me out of the US Patent office cause I smelled like dried fish! Go figure? Bonsaial |
