Espoma Soil Perfector
Anyone ever use Espoma brand "Soil Perfector" in their soil mix?
http://www.espoma.com/content.aspx?type=sp The closest nursery in my new area does not carry my old stand-by, Schultz clay soil conditioner (aka turface, calcite). Does "soil perfector" compare at all to turface, or is it more like haydite? Experience? Input? Silly jokes? TA, pootsie |

I was surprised to find that Walmart carries Schultz clay soil conditioner in the outdoor pool supplies dept. You might also try Home Depot, in their outdoor pool supplies dept. Of course, that is in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Hmm,
I didn't know Espoma made a soil conditioner. I've been using their fertilizer for quite a few years now and am really impressed with it. If you end up trying this soil conditioner, post the results so I can see if it's something I might like to try. ![]()

Do be sure to check out the ingredients. For example, some of that Scotts stuff has fertilizer and even weedkiller mixed in with their calcinated clay product and the names are all kind of confusingly homogenous; i.e., Turf Builder, Turf Master; Turf Serf
an N-P-K would be a warning flag.Regards, Matt

pootsie,
Just used "Soil Perfector" in a recent repot of a crabapple. Used it as I would typically use Akadama or decomposed granite, mixing it with some aged fir bark and a bit of peat moss (because I ran out of fir bark). I'll let you know how it goes. From the looks of things it gives a fast draining mix with a decent amount of water retention. Will have to see how well the tree reacts. I'll post as things progress. 27 pound bag was about $17 bucks at my garden supply store which I found expensive. however, the granule size was appropriate for my uses (a large tree). Might not be the best for a mame or mid-size tree. |

Well, today I was driving out to attend a small claims trial (big time lawyer, that's me
) and I passed THE garden center I've been looking for since I moved here. Not that I have been looking for this place, but this kind of place. "Why yes, sir, Schultz clay soil conditioner is right over there to the left."happy pootsie ![]() So ferrgit that espoma stuff. Maybe in the future I'll experiment, but just for today I'm stickin with what works preparing to mix, pootsie |

Hi all, I just came upon this thread on a search. I realize it's a bit outdated but didn't want to start a new thread. I just picked up a bag of Espmona soil conditioner and was wondering what people's experience with it was like before I dive in and use it. I'm currently giving it a soak test, but I already feel like it will hold up better than high-fired akadama, which holds form pretty darn well in its own right. The particle size looks good - I'm thinking I'm not going to lose much of the bag when I screen. Any knowledge would be helpful. Thanks.

Jonnyseed, I've used soil perfector for a couple of years now. At first I used it in conjuction with Turface but have gradually been phasing the Turface out. The larger size of the soil perfector creates more air space and looks better with larger trees. Right now, I'm only using Turface for my small tropicals. The soil perfector is also a lot sharper than Turface so it should produce better roots.
