I use 1/4" minus granite obtained from a local garden supplies for A$6 a bag which they load onto the truck (too heavy for me). It is a clean product so no waste at all. I am unaware of micro nutrients harboured in the granite but I do know it will not deteriorate because it's as hard as ... well granite.

Regards Ash

"When I went to a feed store that had grit, it was labeled something like, "Enhanced" but it didn't say what it was inhanced for, so I shyed away from buying it. Anyone know what additives are included in grit?"

Enhanced probably means it's been sprayed with something or had calcium added, as noted before. However, I have run across a product that's made specifically for pigeons that's been sprayed with anise oil to get them to eat it. The granite tends to be a greyer, more attractive color than the regular white stuff, but it's oily, which is a very bad thing for soil. I had to take a bag back once I noticed the oil content...

Rockm, The enhanced part is for poultry. Sprayed with antibiotics and other stuff to make your fryers healthy and strong.

Make sure if you go to buy chicken grit that it is actually granite, ours down here in FL is limestone shells ground up (adds calcium for egg strength)!
