Crushed marble in soil?

I found this in quite small boxes at a local supermarket and wondered if this might be a good additive in soil. I found out through google that it can raise the pH level and I don't really know if that's desireable... Any thoughts?

I would not use the stuff, it will break down and will cause the soil to become very basic, good only for a select number of Alpine conifers.

Ah, I didn't even imagine that it could break down... Thanks for the input.

O, bloody bollocks... I just repotted my ch elm with it... I don't think it will break down for a long time but it's not very beneficial if it's basic. Damn, new repot...

You'll just have to keep an eye on the PH. I hope you used plenty of organics in the soil. Be hopeful Elms like to be repoted every year, or at least can tolerate the procedure.

Another reason for not using it--crushed marble is used for packing underneath brick walkways. I used 300 lbs of it to lay a granite block pathway in my backyard a while back. Marble tends to break into flat, or at least not really angular chips. That allows it to compact really well to form a firmer substrate for brick or pavers to lay on. That compacting capability is probably about the worst thing you want in bonsai soil...
