Re: crushed granite as a soil amendment?

I have been using Turface/oildry, spaghnum peatmoss and compost. I screen everything and then mix it. I am not sure if I like the spaghnum moss. I have been using less of it. I may try composted wood chips next year

Re: crushed granite as a soil amendment?

I know none of you are nea me here in Georgia. BUT I use crushed slate in the soil and it works great. Also we have a number of querry's near my work and the granite there seems to be working great also. It is light gray with lots of white(quartz) streaks in it. have you ever been to a querry? amazing

chicken grit

I have been using it for 12 years...I believe that it works better than the "River Sand" that most recommend as an additive...it is cleaner. It is very hard and works perfectly to improve drainage and irritate the fine roots. It does not break down. It is 'crushed granite' not decomposed and does not change the PH. I hope this helps...

I was taught from the beginning of my experience over 25 years ago that soil should be made of three things: crushed granite, turface, and ground up pine bark.

Here in Georgia there are a lot of quarries where granite can be found, but I prefer to buy already graded Grani-grit which comes from North Carolina Granite Co. in Mount Airy in 50 lb. bags. The dust has to be sifted out.

I use Turface MVP which comes in 50 Lb. bags, also requiring sifting.

I use Nature's Helper which is ground up pine bark in a 3 cubic ft. bag from Home Depot, but also is sold in nurseries. Also requires sifting to get the dust out and for grading.

This has worked very well for me, and I have over 100 trees in this mixture.

I'm going to experiment a little with an oil-dri product that is NAPA's own brand in the spring on some "yard trees" just to see how it works as a substitute for Turface.

Grani Grit/Crushed Granit

I use the Grani Grit (Growers Size) in all my mixes. I also use Turface (OilDri) and Pine Bark. FOr standard mix, equal parts of each. For my pines/evergreens, more of the grit/turface.

I purchase the GraniGrit from Agway. I get the OilDri from Sam's Club, and the mulch just about anywhere. This is quite inexpensive, and works well once it is all sifted to get out the fines. Don't forget that part.

If you have lots of plants or just wnat a cheap, all-purpose mix, this is it.
