I found the name of a company -

Hydraulic press Brick Company in Brooklyn, Indiana

Haydite looks like expanded shale. A lot of people use fired, calcinated clay, which you can find under the brand names Turface (MVP preferred) and TERRAGREEN.

All of these should be sieved to remove the dust.

Regards,

Matt

Haydite is a brand name for fired clay as is turface. I use a fired clay from near Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is referred to as "lightweight" aggregate and is used in paving roads and a whole bunch of other things. The color is red as that is the color of the clay in Oklahoma. I have heard that the bonsai club in Tulsa gets a pick up truck full every year at a cost of about $20. I drove a dump truck down there and got a big load for the local nursery for about $125.

There should be similar places around the country if you look for road construction or paving stone places. Be sure that the clay is high fired to 2000ºF as it is very stable and will not melt when watered down. There is another kind that is fired to 1200º to 1400ºF which is used for cat litter and other things but that forms a pile of muck when watered.

Check out the local paving contractors and ask where they get their paving materials and then go there.

michindi,
I've been using haydite since early 80's and get mine from hydraulic pressed brick in Ohio, but, that doesn't help you :>)
The pamphlet fromthe Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute has a list of members in the US and around the world. Some are in TX, La ,Al,Ar and NC but nothing listed inFlorida,
but,
try Tom Brantley, Great American Bonsai, in Ocala. He makes soil and uses haydite. You didn't say where you were from in Florida.
Dale

Soil sources...

Hi Dale, thanks for your timely post... I'm preparing to pot some trees here in Virginia and am trying to find some sand or stone-based soil that would be good for bonsai.

I used to use a fired clay soil conditioner from my local garden center but they switched a while back to the expanded shale (vole block) which is too large.

I was looking for a crushed pumice or something like that and frequently saw mention of Profile (porous ceramic) and Turface (also by Profile I think).

Several hours drive is no problem. A korean couple own a bonsai farm near me and they've been looking for a few tons of good material.

If you'd be so kind would you post or email me the contact info for the NC location of the company that might have that Haydite?

If anybody would also email me info for anything like pumice, haydite, volcanic sand...

And what may be best to use as an all-purpose bonsai soil base.

Many thanks in advance,
Andy

For anyone interested in bagged pumice at reasonable prices go to www.drystall.com. and check out their base product. I have purchased it in California for ~$8 per 40 lb. Their website indicates that it is available back east at Agway and at Southern States distributors. Regards, heyMikey!! ps. I am not affiliated with any of the forementioned companies.

Thanks so much,
andy

Andy,
You might want to try Moe Einhorn at Little Trees Bonsai in Dumfries ( just outside DC). He carries Tom Brantleys soil and sells bulk haydite.

The NC manufacturer is Carolina Stalite co. in Gold Hill, NC 704-637-1515
or
Solite Corp. , their Richmond office at 804-321-6761.
Regards,
Dale
