African Violet Soil?
my mother collects african violets and i collect bonsai... my mother is confident with her soil but i would not be if i were to mix my own... could african violet soil be suitable for bonsai? i've also seen pre-packed african violet soil in stores that i think would be alright for my trees. then again, i'm very new to bonsai. any help would be great!
thanks! j.g |

It would work fine as long as you added a measure of grit to it. coarse sand, gravel of some sort, lava, would be a grit. This will help out with the peat that is usually in the violet mix. The grit will keep the soil "friable" and be easier to re-wet.

Thanks a lot Al!
I just have one more question: if a certain tree's soil mix calls for 70% organic and 30% grit material, should I then treat the african violet mix as organic material? Thanks again! j.g |
