It depends how big you want them to be, what species you are growing,
what sort of plant you are starting with, how long you want them to be in training before you bonsai them, what sort of pots you have or can afford and probably a multitude of other factors. Get a good book and read up on the traditional classification sizes. You can probably also find them on the web with a quick Google. I certainly have, although my trees range in height (not counting the pot) from 4" up to over 3 feet. I tend to like the big ones with fat trunks. Many of my trees in development will be in the 2.5-3 foot range. One factor to take into account is leaf size. If you have a tree that has leaves that don't reduce in size, a bigger tree will be better.
