I'm going to see the people at the extension office and see what they say.
Thanks for the suggestion.

The tree is a magnolia stellata. The fungus stuff grows anywhere on the tree
it feels like, not just in one area.

You will have to give a better description or show it to an extension agent. At
least show it to someone knowledgeable at a garden center. Where on the tree is
this stuff? What kind of tree is it? Where did you see it at work?
