[IBC] Turface
The question I have is for a substitute for using turface. I can get this product, but only through a Bonsai Nursery here locally, the mark up is high. I would be paying about $25 per bag. Anyway, what I am wondering is, can you use "oil dry" that you
buy at the auto store instead? Are there any disadvantages to using this? Thanks..........................Rick Rick Zone 5 New England ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by John Quinn++++ ************************************************** ****************************** >>-->> The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ <<--<< +++++ Questions? Re: [IBC] Turface
Sorry for shooting blanks. Seems sometimes when I try
to delete one of the addresses in a reply, it gets sent. You can use oil dry, you can use dry stall (keeps horsie's feet dry, get at a full service pet store) or you can look up Turface on the internet and find a local dealer. I get Turface for $8.25 per 50# bag. Kitsune Miko --- Tlsrider <tlsrider@HOTMAIL.COM> wrote: > The question I have is for a substitute for using > turface. Re: [IBC] Turface
If you want Turface without buying a gigantic bag or paying bonsai nursery
prices, go to a garden center and buy Schultz Multi-Purpose Soil Conditioner. It is actually Turface, in a 5 pound bag. I don't remember what it cost, but it was about what you would expect. Re: [IBC] Turface
Last year I got Shultz Profile, which is turface, for
about $8 per bag. This year it was $16 per bag. With 300 trees, 50 pounds ain't too much. Re: [IBC] Turface
G'day all...
OilDri ?I've been using OilDri for several years... For me, it works fine. I don't have a tree in a pot larger than 16" X 10" X 4" (estimated)...except for a couple in 5 gallon nursery cans. If cost is a consideration, I get OilDri for under $4 for a 40 pound bag...at Sam's Club. Have a good day. [IBC] FW: Turface
Oops -- hit "send" too soon, sorry.
Check out Turface's website http://www.profileproducts.com/productinfo_turface.html to get some ideas on the range of products and who might use them. A key here is the fact that some of their products are aimed at athletic field maintenance. Check with local schools, sports facilities, or with companies that do grounds maintenance. They are all using the stuff by the ton. You have to talk their language -- "field conditioner" -- not "bonsai soil". Your goal should be to find a local distributor who might stock it, and then try to get them to sell you a couple bags. The biggest part of the cost is from shipping -- truckload quantities only cost pennies per pound to ship. I bought a couple bags of Mulemix directly from their headquarters location in Columbia Tennessee - the cost was $3.50 per 50# bag! There are other brand names of similar material. http://www.diamondpro.com/bags.html http://www.mulemix.com/conditioners.htm http://www.oildri.com/agri/turf.htm http://www.proschoice1.com The problem I have is finding suitable material for the non-organic, non-water absorbing, component -- "course sand". In my area, I can easily find particle sizes that are under 1/16" inch (too small), or over 1/4" (too big). No one seems to have anything in the 1/8" to 3/16" range. Ideas anyone? ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by John Quinn++++ ************************************************** ****************************** >>-->> The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ <<--<< +++++ Questions? Re: [IBC] Turface
Respectfully, they're different. Turface is Montmorillonite clay, Profile is
Arcillite clay. The latter is also fired hotter, resulting in a material that is almost a ceramic, with a lower CEC than Turface. David J. Re: [IBC] FW: Turface
I have found Turface products at LESCO which supplies golf course in my area.
I don't know how widespread they are but I think LESCO covers the Southeast and maybe national. However, Lessee's price was twice the price charged by a commercial growers supply in Apopka, FL called BWI and I know they haveoutlets all over the Southeast. I get 50# bags & use it for bonsai soil, a bit in houseplant soil & use
it straight for my pond plants. Now I live 2 hours from the Turf place I plan to get 2 bags at a time.
