[IBC] OT: Browsers

I'm gonna move away from Outlook Express and Internet Explorer if
I can.

So I'm experimenting with other browsers.

The two candidates now are Opera and Mozilla Firefox, their
browsers AND mail programs. Currently, Mozilla Firefox has the
lead in my personal browser wars. I don't like the look of Opera
(at least not the freebie I'm testing).

I'd be happy to hear from users of either as to their likes and
dislikes.

Re: [IBC] OT: Browsers

Jim-

I, too, wanted to find something to browse with other than IE. I've been
using Firefox for the past several months and like it a lot. I think one of
the best things about it is the built-in pop-up blocker. I haven't tried
Opera myself....

For an alternative to Outlook Express, try Thunderbird, also created by the
Mozilla folks and available at their site. It's also done very well for me
for email and newsgroups.

Browser-wise, I'd go with Firefox, all the way. It is my main browser these
days. The downside of it is that you'll encounter some pages where the CSS
is a little flunky.

I'd not use their built in mail, but go with Eudora instead. Lots of
muscle, works rather well.

I'm currently using Outlook, after years of using Eudora, simply because of
the need of sharing calendar and address book with a couple business
partners.

Opera, while good, is a little buggy lately (can't go on yahoo without
crashes with the latest version anyway).

Cheers

Jim

I've used both. I have Opera 6.05 on my Win95 machine, so it's not the
latest or greatest. I have Mozilla on my new Linux box. There is no
comparison in my book, Mozilla wins hands down. Although Opera is supposed
to be the fastest, Mozilla is much faster on my slow dialup. Both have
effective popup blockers. And your right, the free Opera sucks, you will
have to get the paid version, I did. I have also heard that Opera has some
built in spyware and that Mozilla is clean. One of the things that
impressed me is that Mozilla will load text first without formatting, so
you can begin reading very quickly, which is what I am doing 95% of the
time anyhow. It loads some pages unbelievebly fast for a dialup. Apparently
both have really good cacheing, but Mozilla's is better, at least over this
older Opera.

Another annoying point. I was trying to load Opera on my Linux box and it
failed, thank God. I later found out that Opera sometimes eats the Mozilla
browser, and then won't let you reload it, sound familiar?

Re: [IBC] OT: Browsers

Mozilla Firefox for the browser and Thunderbird for the mail program
get my vote. I've been using both for sometime now. Before that I used
the straight Mozilla browser and mail client, which worked well too.

Re: [IBC] OT: Browsers

I gave Mozilla Firefox a heavy-duty test last night, and I think
it failed the test.

The test consisted of shifting often between sites -- sometimes
the same 2 sites and sometimes from one to another and another
and then another. I downloaded something largish (at least 1 MB)
from each site to test the highly touted download manager, then
canceled one of the downloads, half-way through.

The process ATE up Mozilla's resources. It began to take as much
as 6 minutes to switch from one site to another. I've NEVER had
that problem with IE4, 5, or 6.

This is a procedure that I occasionally do in real life -- I
sometimes "find" things for people on the I'net -- for a small
fee. Any browser I choose will have to manage that kind of a
life.

Too bad. I was beginning to like it. Opera's next, and I'm
already not too happy with it. :-(

I've added vanilla Mozilla and Netscape to my list of potential
browsers.

Opera (like Firefox) has the ability of changing it's skin. If you don't
like the default, select the one you like most:

Really? Do you use 7.54? I use 7.51 myself without any trouble.

Opera used to be (not long ago for that matter) a one 3.5" diskette program
(<1.4MB). Even now it's below 3.5MB (including email and usenet clients).
For what it does, which is more and faster than other similar products
(Mozilla, Firefox and M$IE included), it's close to a miracle.

Yes, but you're measuring two different things here:
1. Win95 + Opera
2. Linux + Mozilla
The result is: Linux is faster than Win95, not Mozilla is faster than Opera.

Spyware? Which (one)? Where did you hear that? Really, I'm interrested. My
anti-spyware software doesn't find anyhing.

I know that the free version comes with ads, but that's not spyware.

With a couple of clicks you can tell Opera that it shouldn't load (nor
process) any multimedia data, leaving you with text only.

This is FUD, Brent.

Netscape is no longer being developed. On top of that, it had the same core
as Mozilla (and Firefox). So, if you're looking for an improvement, you're
looking in the wrong place.
