BonsaiCAM V2
Here are the chatlog and comments for the latest bonsaicam event
The tree is a Japanse Maple (Acer palmatum 'SHISHIGASHIRA') One of the dwarf maples - called "Lion's Head" These grow rather slowly. I acquired the tree at a nursery in Fremont, CA about 7 years ago. It had been field grown, probably in Oregon and then lifted and put in a large nursery container. It stood about six feet tall when I bought it - I left about 4-1/2 feet behind in the nursery dumpster, to the shock and dismay of the nursery owner. ![]() The tree was transplanted into a growing box measuring about 15 inches on a side and 5 inches deep. It has been in this box at least 5 years. That's a bottle of Clorox towels in the foreground. I have taken to wiping down my cutting tools with that to help sterilize them, mainly when working with Japanese Maples and trees susceptible to verticillium wilt. You can see a small horizontal scar on the trunk, probably where this tree was grafted onto common Japanese Maple rootstock. I have been working at reducing this over the past few years by buffing the trunk to even out irregularities.

Inspecting the pot and cutting all the wire ties. The box was still in fair condition at this point and I was going to see if I could save it for another tree.
Please note, this is a SMOOTH barked tree, and it's perfectly acceptable to handle one like this. Don't go handling your pines like this or you will scrub off coarse bark.

Working my way around the perimeter of the box with a root hook. It's becoming obvious that this tree has grown well into the box and it would be a difficult prospect to remove it.
It probably would take at least 30 minutes to do it, and the box is just in fair condition, so

In the interest of time and moving this along I chose one of my "gentle persuaders" - a mattock in this case. A hatchet, crowbar or hammer would work equally well, as the box was constructed with simple wire staples.

Now the growing box has been reduced to a pile of slats.

Now I'll be using a root hook to unpack the root ball. You can find a selection over at TreeBay This one is the JR-6105 stainless steel master hook. I like it because it's shiny and easy to see in a pile of soil. I have a black steel 6104 that works equally well, although somewhat less photogenic

A lot of working around the perimeter alternating with root hook and sickle to loosen up the rootball. The tree had quite a well developed root pad, which made me believe it would be possible to put it into a bonsai pot.

The rootball has been made fairly flat by a combination of combing and trimming beneath. I am alternating between the root hook and root sickle, which rapidly cuts through soil and roots.
