BonsaiCam For Friday April 9, 2004

Tomorrow afternoon I hope to be doing a bonsaiCAM session, probably beginning [Postponed to 5:15PM]. If it is very overcast I may take advantage of the morning light.

The tree will be a California Juniper.

This is one of the larger C. Junipers in captivity. Next project is to fix my wagon.

This was taken with a wide angle lens and the baby is somewhat in front of the tree, so it's actually rather larger than it might appear.

Watch this thread for details on the session.

Regards,

Matt

The Plan

I have had this juniper about ten years. Ever since the first time I saw this tree I have been looking at it sideways, wondering what it might look like as a cascade. Today was the first day it was ever photographed. My suspicions appear to be correct! It looks like it will make a wonderful cascade or semi-cascade!

For the first five years I just continued to let it acclimate to the box (really a crate) in which it had been planted by the gentleman who collected it.

In 2002 I found a mica pot that looked like it would be big enough to do what I had in mind:

Here is a plan for what the tree might look like in ten years or so.

That's needle juniper foliage, of course, but it gives you a basic idea.

Tomorrow I hope to just get it planted and secured in the pot. I might arrange a couple branches and depending how the roots look, I may lightly wire this tree. It has not been repotted in ten years!

Anyway, here's the ultimate goal. Remember this is all contingent on the way the roots come off the trunk!

Some preparations -

Here's 4-1/2 cubic feet of bonsai soil mixed just for this tree. I expect I'll have a bit left over, but you can't be too sure.

That's a lot of soil. Enough for a small collection!

That's my license plate. Honk if you see me!

That's going to be one serious cascade! It will definitely get a lot of "whoas!" at the bonsai shows.

Matt,

It looks like the ones Kimura styled when he was in Dallas. Nice! I look forward to seeing the result!

Too bad they are so difficult to maintain here!

> Matt, What's your soil mix for the CA Juniper?

It's 1/3 turface, and other 2/3 balance is fir bark, pumice and lava, so the true organic portion of the mix is a bit less than 1/4 organic (2/9 or 22% ).

Regards,

Matt

Group #1 - This is a selection from the series of photos that were broadcast in real time from our bonsai webcam.

(Note: UL=upper left UR=upper right LL=lower Left LR=Lower right)

UL: The tree before any work. That's a soda can resting on the crate in the center of the trunk for scale. I had been considering this repotting project for quite some time. When the crate made it clear it wasn't going to last another year, it became a reality. I'm really glad we developed the bonsaicam so that this could be shared with the world!

UR: Trying to tap the crate apart gently after removing the wire. Turns out it was screwed together. Those screws don't turn after 10 years exposure!

LL: Cutting the crate open with a SawZall that Kathy bought for me for Christmas. This was the first time I'd used it and I see why they are so popular. It took just a couple minutes to cut the box apart with this wood blade.

LR: Last bit of the box being cut away. The roots look healthy and I am very relieved that the majority of the root system points to the right (which will be downward when the tree is repotted). I had been concerned about finding a big root going the wrong way.
