BonsaiCAM For April 28, 2004

Today's bonsaiCAM covered some thinning on an overgrown Cryptomeria. This tree has not been cut back in three years, so it was very congested.

It's an unusual style for cryptomeria, which are usually seen in the formal upright style.

Instead, here we have a twin trunk informal upright. This tree came from Dwight Way Nursery in Berkeley, CA about 15 years ago. It was fairly old then, so I am guessing it's around 40 by now.

When thinning cryptomeria, you need very sharp scissors. You should always cut back to an existing bud if you can. This prevents the tips from dying back. In this case the tree had a lot of vigor, but it is so congested that the tree must first be cut back some to reveal the branch structure and then again to the "optimum" areas.

There were a lot of dead twigs as well as leaves and debris inside.

Most all the work was done with an Ashinaga shear that gives a good reach and sufficient leverage to cut large twigs. Watch out for bits of leftover wire!

The thinning is completed, but the cutting back is not quite done. The goal now is to allow light and air to penetrate into the tree and awaken some dormant buds.

Ideally, this should be done EVERY YEAR to maintain a both the silhouette and invigorate the plant. If you let it go too long, there is the danger that the competing branches will shut out light from the interior, causing twigs on the interior to die.

This activity is a good one to put on your calendar for late spring.

Did you know you can add private events to the bonsaitalk calendar as a reminder when you need to do things?

Just click on the calendar button and log in a private event!

BELOW: Three views of the thinned juniper. It would be nice to cut back some of the long shoots more, but until they have budded out it is not a good idea to cut them. The ones I have left long don't have any side buds yet.

I also left one "before" view at lower right

Geodude silently slides open the antique shoji screen and enters bonsaiTALK Chat.
acousticco: Or would this be a bad time of year to wire?
Ralph: That was a lot of trimming so far!
grampz: ok...i kinda guessed you might be located somewhere around there

washout03 bows and enters bonsaiTALK Chat.
Honored Guest253: i don't know acoustico............i wire this time of year..butmostly tropicals
acousticco: Yeah I don't know either
Ravenna: in one of my books it says end of spring is good for wiring for c.
Ralph: blurry pics
Ralph: what happened?
grampz: I have never considered abad time of year for wiring...it just may have to be wired more often if it is growing fast
Ravenna: I don't know... he was obviously near the computer... may be he is "moving us"...lol
Ralph:General Treebay, the image has gone awol!
washout03: i heard fall was a bad time to wire because that was when the bark grew the most. any truth to that?
Chris_M. leaves bonsaiTALK Chat.

Chris_M. rattles the shoji and enters bonsaiTALK Chat.
grampz: I have wired in all seasons...you just need to keep a good watch on them
Honored Guest253: hey,chris
Honored Guest253: i wire all times of the year, too
Ravenna: reminds me of a story by roald dahl where a woman asks to preserve the brain of her husband in a special solution because she "loves" him allegedly.. he just keeps one eye he can look with while the brain is in that solution
bmor: wish i had more time tonight but gotta get up early . thanx matt !
Ravenna: ... then to annoy him she smokes in front of that eye... having that web cam moved feels just like that..
Ravenna: guest: I thought it depended on the species or not?
Honored Guest253: it probably does......i tend to be haphazard with rules
grampz: how cute is that Matt
Ralph: future actress crashes set!
acousticco: gotta go!
ZONG! acousticco beams out of bonsaiTALK Chat.

bmor begs your pardon and leaves bonsaiTALK Chat.
Chris_M: and the clippers come out
grampz: I too probably am too lax with the rules...I have found not all suggestions are correct...but I have been involved in horticulture much longer than bonsai

Geodude leaves bonsaiTALK Chat.
Ravenna: well... if his girl starts cutting it will be a very interesting style...
Ralph: On my way out, nice chattin
Ravenna: well, I guess those rules always work for certain areas...
Honored Guest253: bonsai got me started in horticulture....some 30 years ago
Ravenna: at least here in Switzerland they said that it can even vary very much from region to region...
Honored Guest253: seeya ralph
Ravenna: oopps. guest... can't compet with that...
Ravenna: see you ralph...
grampz: that could be...but some of the ways of bonsai are contrary to good horticulture practices
grampz: IMHO

Chris_M. begs your pardon and leaves bonsaiTALK Chat.
TreeBay: I think that's it for tonight. It's getting pretty dark over here
Ravenna: thanks Matt...
Honored Guest253: thanks matt.......looks like you have your hands full
grampz: thanks matt...great looking tree
TreeBay: I'll check out the chatlog and see if there were any questions I missed
