BonsaiCAM For April 28, 2004
Today's bonsaiCAM covered some thinning on an overgrown Cryptomeria. This tree has not been cut back in three years, so it was very congested.
It's an unusual style for cryptomeria, which are usually seen in the formal upright style. Instead, here we have a twin trunk informal upright. This tree came from Dwight Way Nursery in Berkeley, CA about 15 years ago. It was fairly old then, so I am guessing it's around 40 by now.

When thinning cryptomeria, you need very sharp scissors. You should always cut back to an existing bud if you can. This prevents the tips from dying back. In this case the tree had a lot of vigor, but it is so congested that the tree must first be cut back some to reveal the branch structure and then again to the "optimum" areas.
There were a lot of dead twigs as well as leaves and debris inside. Most all the work was done with an Ashinaga shear that gives a good reach and sufficient leverage to cut large twigs. Watch out for bits of leftover wire!

The thinning is completed, but the cutting back is not quite done. The goal now is to allow light and air to penetrate into the tree and awaken some dormant buds.
Ideally, this should be done EVERY YEAR to maintain a both the silhouette and invigorate the plant. If you let it go too long, there is the danger that the competing branches will shut out light from the interior, causing twigs on the interior to die. This activity is a good one to put on your calendar for late spring. Did you know you can add private events to the bonsaitalk calendar as a reminder when you need to do things? Just click on the calendar button and log in a private event! BELOW: Three views of the thinned juniper. It would be nice to cut back some of the long shoots more, but until they have budded out it is not a good idea to cut them. The ones I have left long don't have any side buds yet. I also left one "before" view at lower right
