Yellow leaves on Chinese Elm
Does anyone know why? Here is some info:
-Planted in 75% pine bark/25% turface. -Watered only when slightly damp -Has been brought in garage for temps under 40F -Just started showing yellow leaves about two and a half weeks ago, during a time when the winter has been an average of 70F in day and 55F at night here in Houston. -Added slow release fert pellets about a week ago. Yellow leaves have increased in number since then. Any help appreciated.

in my expierience, chinese elms have dropped leaves, yellowing first, after being moved, sort of a shock due to the change in environment, kinda like a ficus would do. i would suggest placing it back into its winter storage, allowing it to get sufficient sunlight of course, and leave it there until spring is officially here. IMO, bringing it in and out according to temp. (which is what the quoted statement leads me to believe is the case) may be the cause of the problem. chris

I agree with ChrisM.
Furthermore, the leaves that are yellowing are problably those that were on the tree last year. When they have done their job, the tree replaces them by a new set of leaves for the next growing season. What would be a problem is the yellowing of a new set of younger leaves. |

james makes a valid point, i just noticed you are in texas. unless you get a blizzard, your tree should be alright outdoors all year. in case of some extreme cold spells (which i expierienced while in texas) you will want to bury the pot in a mulching agent - mulch, leaves, etc. to protect the roots and the pot.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I believe what Aldevaux said was right. It appears the tree is just shedding its old leaves because new growth is popping up in different places. This would make sense given the time of year. First I thought it was some mineral difficiency problem.
