Yellow bark on a San Jose Juniper

The surface roots and the bark near the ground on my San Jose Juniper are turning yellow and flaking off a little. This doesn't fit the description of any illness I've heard of.

The tree is otherwise healthy and appears to be thriving.

Has anyone got any idea what this is?

Mineral or salt deposits from water, maybe?

Yeah, maybe...

So, it's probably not something worth worrying about?

I guess I'm just a bit nervous about my trees. I've only been doing bonsai for a little over a year and have already had several casualties

I think (hope) I'm getting past the killing lots of trees phase of my bonsai development though.

Yes I think Joanie is right. A soft scrub brush (non metalic) should deal with it. Junipers can take it, just go easy.

In fact it is common to scrub juniper bark until the reddish part shows, to get a tree ready for showing.

Zone 9-10, eh? SoCal or Norte?
