White Stuff On My Trees..Help!

What is this stuff? It only shows up on my elm trees trunks and i cant get if off. I dont think its doing any harm to the trees but it just does not look very good. Any Ideas?

Ok here are a few pics. I think it might be hard water deposits. If so how can a person remove it.

The white areas aren't really obvious in the pictures. Maybe a dab of vinegar and a toothbrush will work. Be careful not to scrub off any bark you want to keep!
