White stuff on my Japanese White Pine?

I noticed this white stuff on my Japanese White Pine today. Is it some kind of fungus, insect, or anything to worry about? Also, in the last picture, are those little cones forming? If so, should I remove them?

This looks like wooly aphids. I usually hose them off with a bottle sprayer and check regularly since they are bound to reappear. If this doesn't work, you can use a detergent/oil solution or chemical stuff (I usually try the least toxic methods first; you can search the forum for recommendations on this).

Yes, looks like cones; I think it's better to remove them so that the tree isn't weakened any further.

Yep wooly aphis. Water has never worked for me, but maybe if you catch them early enough. Thanks for the beautiful illustration!

Regards,

Matt

A little bit of Denatured Alcohol on a cotton swab usually takes care of the problem.

We have 3 creeping scots pines in the garden and one of them got quite a bad case of wooly aphids recently, brought on by a small scots pine sapling getting a really really bad case and not being noticed. I burnt the sapling and hosed the creeping scots pine down heavily every couple of days, that seems to have done the job and gotten rid of the things, obviously just gotta keep an eye out for re-ocurrences.

(Methylated spirits is also reported to work although i have no experience of this)

Regards
Rowan

Thanks everyone. I applied some Safer insectidal soap with seaweed (it was what the store had), and it seems to have knocked back 80-90% of the infestation. I'll apply a second treatment in a few more days.

Is the problem, or the symptom of the problem, the spider-web like strings in each of the pictures or am I not looking hard enough?

I'm concerned about the white patches around the bases of the needles.
