Weird Stuff In My Serissa Soil

Hello all,
I have a Kyoto Serissa. Since the temp dropped and I brought it inside for the winter it has displayed typical Serissa characteristics (droping all it's leaves and starting to look dead) For a while it would put out new leaves then they would die right off. The tree was still in it's nursery container waiting for the spring, so I scratched the bark the other day and it was still bright green. Sunday night while I was transplanting some of my 4 and 5 month cuttings to new cozy homes, I figured since I have the table covered with newspaper anyway I should have a look at the roots and slip pot it if needed. When I pulled the tree out of the pot, I noticed tons of these little Gray/blue spheres. They almost looked like left over Osmocote shells, but they were all grouped together. I brushed some of these out of the soil and onto the paper. They were squishy with very ply-able skin on the outside. When I squeezed them they popped and jelly looking stuff squirted out. I figured just to be safe I should bare root the tree to make sure I got all of them out, and then re-potted the tree into a nice new pot with fresh (Turface, Grit, Bark) soil. Hopefully the tree will do better now, but does anyone know what these things in the soil were? I have looked around but just can't seem to find anything...

Thanks
Adam

snail and slug eggs look like that. Here is an overexposed picture on a tripod site. Linking there directly doesn't work, but you can cut & paste:

I bet that was it. they were all grouped together like that. Is there anything else I should do with this tree to help it recover?

Thanks for your help
