web on juniper bonsai

I got a small juniper bonsai as a gift in early december. It was from a mail order company. It's been doing great until this weekend. Now it suddenly has a thick web forming on its branches. I don't see spiders, but they might be there. I'm keeping indoors at my office under a plant light (until the weather gets warmer).

What do I need to do?

The web may be a common spiderweb, or it might be something more sinister.

There are tiny bugs called spider mites that like to infest a junipers and suck the juices out of the developing buds. You can check for spider mites by tapping a branch over a plain white sheet of paper. If you get little specks dropping off, rub them with a fingertip.

If you see red smears, you probably have mites. They dislike water so a spray of water applied each morning may be helpful in discouraging them. You can also try various insecticidal soaps, Neem Oil or insecticides. Be careful and follow the directions on the label. It may take a few applications to completely eradicate the pest.

If you don't see any evidence of mites and it turns out to be a common spider, don't worry too much. Just brush the web away. They may return, but they are helpful in keeping some other pests away in the meantime!

Regards,

Matt
