Trident maples have black spots

I’ve have done some research but still would like a positive ID and advice on treatment. My tridents have developed black spots (which have not shown up on my other maples/elms… yet). I live near San Jose Ca, in which we have had weeks of wet, cool weather. I am almost positive that this is a fungus problem, but I would like a positive ID and advice on treatment. If this can be immediately treated, will the future leaves this spring develop these spots as well? Should I cut all infected leaves off? Should I treat all the maples/elms? Can the junipers contract this? And last, but not least, what products would you recommend?

Thanks in advance from a new guy,

Pound

Is this scale? Maybe sooty fungus (i think thats what its called)?

Try soap solution and spray the foilage on to top and under for a week or two, my fukien tea had a problem similar to this and the soap solution saved it. I hope this helps.

Good Luck
-Evan

It is difficult to diagnose the type of leaf spot that can be seen on the picture you posted because there are several leaf spots that affect maples and there is little information for those that can infect trindents.
Also, it is often necessary to have a close-up of the spots on both sides of the leaves (sometimes with a hand lens or a microscope) to see what is inside the spots.
However, since your tree has been in a very wet condition for a relatively long period, the leaves have most probably been infected by one of the fungi that infect maples.
Here is a reference of the most common spots that are usually observed on maples and the best way ro control them :

Try to keep your tree in the dryest possible way to avoid these spots.
Best of luck.

I forgot to answer your questions:
It would be better to remove the infected leaves if the tree can withstand it, but those that look healthy may still get the spots if they do not dry out completely or if invisible infections have started.
The fungicide treatments are preventive and should be applied before the leaves get infected.
Other species of trees like elms could be infected with oher pathogens if the leaves remain wet for long periods, but evergreens like junipers do not get these type of spots.

Thanks for the replies so far! I appreciate the feedback - more is welcomed. I will take and post more pics of the spots; my camera has an adequate micro setting, so I can get in closer and underneath. I did do some research before posting the questions, and did come across that link and others, but the pictures and descriptions didn’t match up completely. plus i thought it could be something else that I don't know about.

Pound,
Do a search of the fungus Anthracnose which is common on maples and it's associated sprays that can be easily found at garden ctrs.
BTW, I REALLY recommend Ortho's book "home gardners problem solver" available in a high-priced version ( like garden ctrs use) and a much cheaper home issue for $25ish . You can get them through amazon.com
Everyone with bonsai should have it.
Regards,
Dale

thanks!!

I bought a spray (Ortho's), and used it. I defoliating some of the leaves, discarded those, and the new leaves pushing out look good. I will keep my fingers crossed.
