Trident maple mildew or fungus

Hello, I have a trident maple that I received about a month ago, the pot was broken and had to repot. about a week ago the tree started to release a water or sap (more like water) around the top branches. About 2 days ago I noticed a white spot on one of the branches, today the white spot has spread all around rapidly up the branch, its also started on another branch on the very tip where there is still sitting water or sap. The fungus looks like a white powder not a furry type of funges, I joned a bonsai club and from what little ive learned so far it should be going dormant and they mentioned to put it in my unheated garage away from the very cold and harsh conditions. It should not need any light correct because I put it in around thanksgiving and it has not had any sun or any light for about a week, could it also be poor air circ, could a fan help. I also have another trident and juniper, could this spread to the other trees. Any info would help alot. Thanks Kevin

mike thanks for the info, I spoke with one of the head guys at the club i joined and he told me to take Q-tips and rubbing alcohol and wipe away the white powder to get the infection off the tree. Then spray all my trees with a fungicide-insectacide mix to prevent this again. What does eveyone here think about this.

Kevin,

The guy you spoke with at the Cinci club has the added benefit of having seen the tree first hand. Healthy tridents in our area grow like weeds. Get it healthy and keep it healthy and it should do fine. Mildew, fungus, and aphids are about all you have to worry about with tridents, and those are easy enough to take care of. Keep attending the club and keep asking questions.

If you are able to post a picture that would be most helpful.

Ok I will try and get some pics, should I go ahead and use Qtips and rubbing alc to clean it up and then the fungicide and insecticide. Its spreading everyday so im a little worried about the tree.

Big Smile

instead of dabbing with a q-tip,i would just spray the tree down throughly, then let it air dry for a day.it sounds like aphids from your description.if the tree is dormant you should be o.k.,but you will have to keep an eye on the swelling buds, aphids love any tender growth, dont hesatate to spray the whole tree lightly if they persist.concern pestacidal soap is pretty good and i swear by it.if you cant find concern where you live check online.its really good and natural, they also have rust and fungus sprays as well
