Trident Maple Leaves With Yellow Spots

Hey everyone,

I did a search on the forums but couldn't find anything addressing what's occuring on my trident maple leaves. It's late winter here in the San Francisco Bay Area-- if you can call it winter. It's been sunny for the last 2 weeks or so with temps in the 70's to 80's-- ahh what a climate. Anyway, all the new leaves have been coming along nicely until a week ago when I noticed some leaves started showing some yellow spots. As of today, I'd say a quarter of the leaves have spots on them, both on the older leaves as well as younger ones.

Misc. info: The tree is getting about 6 hours of sunlight. I've been watering it regularly. I fertilized it with Miracle Gro for the first time last week. A spider has set up camp in my tree. There are ants crawling around the branches.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks,
Gerald

Ants in the branches means you have a more destructive pest like scale or aphids being tended by the ants, or perhaps you live in a flood zone? Contrary to popular opinion, the ants aren't sunning themselves up there!

Take a pocket magnifier, and look at the undersides of the leaves and developing buds for the tiny green, black or crimson bodies of the aphids (may be winged or un-winged). Scale develops along the branches there is some info in the ***FAQ*** on both subjects (look under PESTS) with good scale photos.

Regards

Matt
