Trident Maple - Brown / Crisp Edges
I receintly purchased two very old trident maples. They have about 6" trunks and were potted in very large 10-20 gallon containers. I decided to replant right away in early May because of the soil quality. It was basically garden dirt with little drainage. Anyways I repotted them and then placed them in the backyard. One looks fantastic the other looks like it has gotten either leaf burn or mold. I sprayed it with moldacide, but it doesn't seem to have done anything.
I didn't root prune, ect. The leaves are getting crisp and dark on the edges. It is sending out new growth. I've decided to move it into a shadier area. I have photos. Please let me know what you think. If I should quarentine it, ect. Thanks, George |

If it was mine I would defoliate and put back on the bench in full sun. Tridents are very quick to respond -you should get a new flush in two- three weeks, and be back in business!
This was a risky operation so late in Southern Cal. But what done is done right? Good luck!

Reply to Repot
I guess I didn't think it was risky because I didn't root prune. I also thought May was too late in the season. So you think it's leaf scortch or shock?

Okay so you changed the soil in May but didn't cut any roots and so you didn't consider that a "risky" operation. Am I understanding correctly ?
How is it a few days later by the way?

Getting Worse
Sorry Been out of town. Moving to NJ. It is getting worse and all the maples have it now. Including the ones not transplanted. It seems to occur every year. I've been told it was the clorinated water to the hot temperatures and sun
Any other suggestions on what to do? |

It does sound like sun scald but with Trident maples? Gee. How do the roots look on all of these maples? Could you possibly be overcompensating with your watering?
I am moving to Massachusetts, by the way. How are you going to deal with all of your trees? Just curious. Moni |

Moving to NJ
I'm having them shipped via truck. My wife will wrap them really well with wet newspaper and pack them in boxes. As soon as they arrive I'll unpack them and drive them up to my sistern in law's place in Plymouth MA. They will stay there until I move into my house in a few weeks. I was going to keep them at the nursery in central jersey, but I think this will work out. The smaller ones and indoor trees will stay with me in the hotel. How are you planning to move them?
I've tried the same method when moving out to California from Viriginia and it worked really well. |

I am mailing mine. I have given my larger ones away and moved all small ones into small plastic pots. I figure 3-4 days on the road and they will arrive at my sister's house in Rumford, RI. She will have them until we find a place to live but I plan on checking on them at least once a week (a good excuse to see my favorite sister, often). If it had not been the high heat of the year, I would have had no problem with putting everything in the moving van. Oh well. Good luck on your move!
