Is There Such A Thing As Bonsai Worms?
While cleaning up dead leaves in a grow pot of Zelcova, I noticed two earthworms poking up their heads (It's raining here). I'm reluctant to remove them because I've heard that they are beneficial in a vegetable garden. I don't see them as a bad bonsai pest in my books. What's your opinion? Should I get them out

Hi Ladybug,
I don't have any experiential knowledge about this but; I've read that earthworms, while doing no direct damage to the tree, are undesirable in your bonsai pots as the create air pockets in the soil. I'd relocate them to the garden. Best, Kevin

Ladybug, .. early on I read similiar to Kevin but over the years have found worms don't present a hazzard to the plant. In the fall placing trees on the ground and/or in mulch encourage these lil squiglies to move in. When repotting I move them to more favorable places .. garden and compost area .. but in general I jus enjoy seeing their presence , as casings on top of soil or as a wigglie escaping into the soil ..

In a bonsai pot where soil and root space is critical you don't really want them. However every large training pot I have will have earthworms in it and I've seen no damage from them. I figure it's just part of the game. I wouldn't worry about them.

Thank You Muddslinger, Bonsaimon, Carl and Tony!
Merry Christmas to all! I'll leave these critters as is till I repot based on your advice as they are in grow pots. Carl, I love your enterprising e-bay idea! I'll look for your product in the future: Old Mister Crow's Bonsai Worms guaranteed to wiggle the bucks out of you pocket! ![]()
