The SWARM
Help!
My little cork-bark elm has so many of these little buggers on it that it looks like the bark is moving. CREEPY! I don't know what these are or if they are harmful but I just don't like it. I've tried water-spray to remove them. They just come right back. I also doused the tree in Sevin (yummy) and it didn't phase the little blighters. Below is a picture of THE SWARM. Please help us thanks much, pootsie |

Ants and termites swarm like this when the weather conditions are right and the nest population gets to a certain size. They could have been living in the pot(s) or they might have emerged from the ground nearby.
Regards, Matt

Tanx, matt!
They are not on any other tree nearby, strangely enough. They looked kinda like fungus gnats but the wings seemed large ... what could they be I had a suspicion they were in the pot. Should I do an emergency repot here? pootsie |

Well, we figured it out. I went to go poking through the soil of this cork-bark elm, and brushed off a flake of corky bark. Lo and behold, there was the newt of litle white wigglies and new baby bugs!! The cork bark was completely loose all the way around and came off to the touch. My tree is now much skinnier. I repotted it and I am a tad concerned that it may not make it through winter.
wish us ruck! pootsie |

It is now early spring and it appears the tree has survived. The bark on the smaller branches is greening, so it may be alright.
The corky flakes where the nest was hidden are all gone. I think the root of the problem was over-watering in the early days of my stewardship of this tree, causing the bark to rot and leaving an open door for the buggers. Another opportunity to rethink design! pootsie |

Watering the dead
So much for design opportunity.
Although I've been watering it all the time, the tree did not rebound. The initial greening this spring was not enough to carry through. It never budded and the twigs are crisp and dry. Tommorow is the sad and somber Ceremony of the Yard Waste Bag. ![]() pootsie |

Sorry, Poots! But take solace in knowing that the road from neophyte to master is paved with the bones of our dead trees.
