Spider webs

Does anyone know how to keep spiders from making webs in your tree's, cause I have spider webs in my trees. :

You can use "sevin" systemic to help rid your plants of creepys. Or,.. you can use a liquid insecticide that you mist directly on the foliage. Don't let red spider mite get a hold on your trees, they will suck them dry in no time.

In my experience with spidermites, using things as strong and unfriendly as sevin isn't really necessary. I use neem oil for spidermites and just about everything else. It isn't toxic, and I rarely have to use it more than twice before the infestation is controlled. Also, neem oil can also be used on Fukiens without hurting them. It works much like insecticidal soap, but has the added effect of disrupting insects ability to produce firtile eggs. Or, that s how they claim it works.

I personally feel, harsh incesticides should be used as a last result, if at all. And, I live down south were bugs as big as small birds fly around.

Hey Whimsical! So glad to hear you recommend Neem Oil. I started using it several years ago when I was raising orchids (or I should say I attempted to raise orchids) in my greenhouse and it was like a wonder drug. It was the only thing that really got rid of the bugs under the benches, in the plants, etc.

I might add, if anybody wants to try it, make sure you get the pure or almost pure (at least 90 Neem oil. Alot of products now being marketed as neem oil have very little of it in the bottle. It's still mostly chemicals.

so if he eats flies, he won`t be eating trees!

I too have had nothing but success with neem oil. The only reason I can think of why it isn't more widely used is, lack of education on the subject. Suppliers of these toxins would have you believe that organic and biodegradeable substances are mildly effective. I wonder why they would want a person to think that ; ). Personally, I don't have a single thing on my shelves that is chemical based. And, that includes fertilizer. Chemical salt based fertilizers are actually not that good for plants either. The salts cause nutrient lock on a number of trees roots, causing them to starve themselves. Plus, you have have much less chance of over fertilizing the plants with prganics. They act as a buffer.

Rick, While I'm no pro on bugs, you can bet spidermites aren't trying to catch flies in their webs. Spidermites aren't in the spider family. They are mites with spider like qualities. I'm pretty sure the webs are solely used as a means of reproduction. They use the webs to pull leaves together to make a nest for their eggs.

Hey!

I would leave them unless you are showing the tree. Why? 2 reasons:

1. Spiders are considered good luck.

2. I'm no bugatologist, but if I'm not mistaken spiders are carnivores. Which means not only are they not only harmless to our trees, but they might also eat the bugs that consider Bonsai their dinner.

As a general rule, I leave them be. I clear any old webs out with my mini-wiskbroom, but leave the active ones. And strangely enough, I don't have an insect problem!

And the most important reason: I don't want to risk pissing off spiderman!

now all you have to do is figure out if you have spiders or spider mites.
the mite webs are very tiny compared to most spiders,also a sticky substance will appear on the leaves of plants being used for dinner.
the acttual mite is very small,the head of a pin sized.
