Small Mounds, And Flying Bugs
Hi guys. I bought a chinese elm a month or two ago, and since then I've very small flying bugs in the room. I'm also noticing small mound of dirt. They don't really look like earthworm castings. I keep killing the flying bugs, but they seem to keep coming back.
What can I do? Robbie Last edited by RWillieK : 5-Feb-2004 at 11:50 PM. |

They are probably fungus gnats. Try more light, more air circulation and less water. They lay their eggs in wet soil with alot of decomposing organic material.

I LOVE the venus flytrap answer! Seriously, though, if they look like fruitflies, they are fungus gnats. Keeping the soil on the dry side is definitely one step. There is also a BT that is used as a soil drench to kill the larva. Ask your garden center. For those pesky, flying adults, I personally use yellow sticky traps. You can find them sold for whitefly/aphids but they work on the gnats, too. You can spray the adults with Insecticidal Soap or even pyrethrums/pyrethrims but I would not do that inside. Personal choice.
