Slug on Chinese Elm
I bought a Chinese Elm about a month ago from a reputable dealer. *The next day while I was cleaning up the foliage, I watched a slug ooze its way out of the pot. *Clearly, he's a goner. *My question is whether I should be worried about more? *I don't know what their life cycle is like. *I haven't *seen* any more, and the tree looks healthy. *Even though its indoors for the winter (Boston apartment - no yard), its dropped all its foliage. *At the same time, however, its pushing out new leaves, so I'm not worried about the immediate health.
Can I expect to see more slugs in the spring? *Or, was it probably a loner that crept into the pot while the tree was still at the greenhouse? *Much thanks. |

Re: Slug on Chinese Elm
Pierre, check the soil for little round eggs that look (unfortunately) like timed release fertilizer. That is what slug eggs look like. I live in the Northwest where we have slugs bigger than you can imagine. I know this because I lived most of my life just outside of Boston. But, you might also have just had a lone slug that had slithered its way into your pot. The eggs hatch in the spring so that is when you should start watching for more. They love beer, so you can try trapping them in a saucer where they will drown in the beer. Yum!
