Severe wind damage on maple?

These photos are of my acer palmatum. It has sat in the same position for almost 2 years and suffered slightly from wind damage now and then. The pic's show how it has gone in the last couple of days. It is much worse than usuall and the leaves pull off very easily. Do you think this is just wind damage or something more sinister.

A combination of windburn and drying out a bit can do this, particularly to red maple. When it happens, if it is early enough in the season, and past the heatwave weather, you can defoliate it and it will push out another set of leaves.

Be careful, though because persistent conditions could fry the second set too.

Best plan is to get your Japanese Maples under a bit of cover after spring ends. Another tree, a bit of shade cloth, and out of the direct wind.

Regards,

Matt

I agree. From the looks of it, that tree just needs a little more protection. Most of the red maples need more shade than the others.
