Random leaves falling off
Hi, I've only got the one bonsai, as I'm pretty much a beginner at this. Its a Chinese (or Japanese, I forget :
) Elm, and its only about 4 or 5 inches tall. I've kept it watered like I was told, and moved it on to the roof of the extension below my bedroom window during the day, where it gets equal light and shade because of the house. Its growing fine, with plenty of new growth on most of the branches, yet I find every now and then I get the odd random leaf deciding to go yellow. I lifted the first one up to look for pests, but it just fell off. Is this normal, or do I have some sort of bug? Is it aphids? |

Re: Random leaves falling off
Welcome Rich,
This sounds okay, Chinese Elm trees are only semi-deciduous and what you are seeing is probably just a typical leaf drop and regeneration in a somewhat confusing indoor environment. Become concerned if the leaves that yellow are at the tips of the foliage during the growing season. Those leaves should be the newest ones. Vigorous and healthy. Regards, Matt

Re: Random leaves falling off
Thanks for the welcome
and it's never been the new leaves at all, so now I can sleep safe at night I've been keeping my tree as protected as possible cuz it is only little and pretty fragile, so its good to know my efforts aren't wasted! Thanks for the help! |

Re: Random leaves falling off
Trees are actually pretty tough. more damage is done by over________
overwatering overfertilizing oversheltering overpruning overheating Than you would believe. If you had a nice bright porch in open shade, that would be the ideal location for a Chinese Elm Regards, Matt

Matt beat me to it but I was just thinking about that roof top location that you have your tree in. That might be ok for spring but it might fry the roots during summer. 150-160 degrees would't be out of the ordinary up there.

Re: Random leaves falling off
Actually mate the weather we've been having here is pretty awful lately. Sunny, but wet...so kinda good for my tree. It doesn't get too hot up there cuz there's no heating in the room below the roof, and its pretty much shaded by the rest of the house. Its either that or a shady spot in the garden where the dogs'll keep sniffing at it :
Once we've fitted the heating though I'll have to build an extension to my window-sill to put it on. Any tips on how to make a good shelter? |
