quince problem

Here is a quince that has developed something almost overnight. I also have a hornbeam that seems to be doing the same thing.

Re: quince problem

Here's a closeup of a leaf. You can see it on other leaves, also. Alot of small leaves that have just opened are dying. You can see some just to the left of the big leaf. The strange thing is that the hornbeam is doing the same thing but more slowly. I swear I didn't even notice this on the quince two days ago and it is spreading rapidly.

Woops, never did learn left and right. The small leaves are to the right.

Re: quince problem

Earl, did you say you had some cold weather snap?

this looks like some kind of burn. Maybe frostbite?

Re: quince problem

That makes sense. Yes, we have been having 25-30 nights now for a couple weeks. I've been putting the deciduous trees in the greenhouse at night but maybe I got them out too early one morning or left them out too late. We had some cold mornings with some wind, too.

But your answer would sure answer why I seemed to see it all at once...and also why it turned up on the Hornbeam.

I was afraid I had some horrible virus that was spreading!!

No matter, if it's some kind of burn, I will be more careful in protecting them from the extremes we have.

Thanks, Earl

Re: quince problem

Seems like the cause is probably frostbite. The foliage is much more frost resistant when it has hardened off.

Re: quince problem

Just curious, what kind of quince is that?

I love these things, mine has been growing incredibly fast and has over a dozen flowers on it so far Very nice trees.
