Pine wet weather

From what I can tell, due to wet weather has gotten a white cottony growth around the base of needles on some of my pines. Is this wooly aphids, or another fungus, and what are treatable options? If it is wooly aphids, is it alright to use alcohol on them?

Scott

Exclamation Funguscides!

I would go to your local garden center and look for a funguscide that will not effect pines. Also I would at first cut the recommended dose in half and if that does'nt do it then use full dose {be careful}.

I've used alcohol on mealy bugs with no ill effect (on the tree hahaha), but I've never used alcohol on a pine. I don't know hw it could be a huge risk. Elm237, can you exlain why?

I would NOT do this...

Under that soil you may also have Mycorrhizae. Mycorrhizae is a fungus, nothing less, nothing more. Fungicide kills fungus.... Mycorrhizae is very beneficial to pines, you do not want to kill it off.

Be absolutely sure of what you have before doing anything and then if it is a fungus, look for alternative methods of removal.

scott,IF it is wooly aphid, put 3,4 drops of washing up liquid in a bottle sprayer and spray the effected area, leave for about 10 minutes and the use your hose and give a good spray, using the jet spray.the washing up liquid will break down the wax coating of the bugs and the jet will displace them from the tree.ive tried pestacides and metholated spirits with a cotton bud,but found the spray worked best, although you will have to check regulary to see if you got them all.ELM, you dont use anything at full strength on bonsai, directions on bottles are for normal garden use,not bonsai,so you have to adapt the dose.
