One of my Cotoneasters has a problem

I have 2 Cotneasters from the same nursery, both under lights.

One has developed a problem on a few of the leaves where there the cuticle is browning and then decaying. Eventually leaf yellows and dies. It is random and affects young and old leaves.

Lots of light experience - both have same growing conditions but only one sick...

Both otherwise growing vigorously.

1. are you trying to grow these indoors
2. how does the leaf underside look? If there are pests, that's usually where the action is.
3. check out some watering tips in the watering see the table at the bottom of the page.

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt, thanks for the reply

1. They are growing in a room under high-pressure sodium agri lights with a controlled temp of 26 degrees C.

2. The underside of the leaf is normal and there are no obvious pests there either. It is only the upper epidermal layer that has this creeping decay, leaving the area discoloured like in the photo.

3. I read the watering section you mentioned without much joy.

With watering I pretty much follow the rules and have detailed info on all the bonsais I own.

It's odd that two identical plants, grown under same conditions/watering/feeding & bought as brother/sister but only one has this problem.

Cheers, Pete Wilson-Jones

Some plants require dormancy. I don't know if Cotoneaster is one of those, but where I live they are semi-deciduous, so they might.

Just an idea,

Matt

Hey Matt, thanks for the tip.

It has only been under lights for a couple of months since the beginning of Spring.

However, on your point I have already found a few bonsai plants that definitely don't like artificial lights, and perhaps Cotoneaster are one of those.

I'll move the Cotoneasters onto the balcony and see if that makes a difference.

Cheers

Pete

My cotoneasters are all outdoors all year round. All lose all leaves in winter. Typically throughout the growing season, occasional leaves spontaneously die and fall - so I think it's pretty normal what you are seeing.

On the other hand, 26C sounds pretty warm though...
