something else i might add to this.......

a praying mantis is also a good example of pest control.
i was at a nursery and i actually found one on a leaf....
i took it home, but anyways...

ive read up about them.....they are sold in eggs in alot of garden stores and is one of the preffered pest controls.....
they eat nasty insects.....they eat anything that they can get thier claws on, including even beneficial insects like Lady bugs. basically anything that moves, thats smaller than them.

it is also said that large praying mantis can actually eat lizards and small humming birds etc.

so u should consider that...

Praying mantids will also each EACH OTHER, so alot of them in one area isn't really a good idea.

For what it's worth, releasing predators in your garden hoping they will control your bugs is a little bit of a fantasy. For the most part, if there isn't an insect infestation to support all those predators, they will most likely simply disperse to areas where there is prey to support them. Releasing alot of ladybugs and mantis in your backyard will most likely do alot for your neighbors and little for you (at least for what you pay for them).

If there are alot of bugs in your trees, predators will most likely find them. That's why I don't like spraying alot of pesticides unless absolutely necessary. Pesticides in any form will kill indiscriminantly, "good" bugs and "bad."

Keeping trees healthy and well cared for is usually the best way to control pests.

thats right

what ive read about it is......
the disadvantages of Chemical insecticide is that its quickget to the bottom of things straight away basically. disadvantages is that some trees or plants dont cope well to this. e.g chinese elm.

the predator insecticides e.g mantis or lady bugs. the advantages is that you wont have to spray all year round, it benifits more in greenhouse situations indoor where they cant fly off or in large crop areas. disadvantages, like if u only have a few trees...say under 30 or 40 its probably not worth it. they are expensive. and also like rockm said, u gotta keep the "balance" in nature. if all pests are gone, then predators eat themselves (mantids are cannibals also) or they fly off to someone elses garden. you always have a controlled no# of predators in ratio with the pest, so the pests can produce enough to keep your predators around.

hope it helps anyway...
if you dont have a nursery sized garden its probably better to just use insecticide sprays
