Is My Elm Dying?

I have a 35 y/o chinese elm and for some reason the leaves are turning brown. Yesterday I noticed this so i removed the brown leaves and just today I went back out there and there were more brown leaves. Does this sound like anything? The only thing i have done different was fertilize a little more.

Michindi you need to give a little more info. How long have you had this tree. I know you say it is 35 years old but how long is it with you? Have you repotted it recently? Have you changed its position or location where it lives? Where does it live, inside or outside how much sun does it get? How and when do you water it? Has the weather changed by you drastically recently? Is posting a picture a possibility? Can you get a picture of the leaves or tell us more about them.
It appears you live in Florida, as I live in NY my thoughts are going to be from a different climate, but someone living in your type climate may be able to help you better with the answers to the above questions.

I have had this tree for about 7 mths. I bought it from my bonsai teacher and he bought it from his about 20 years ago. It does live outside and only receives afternoon sun. It was repotted befor I bought it. I water it every day around 6 pm and i have a sprinkler system to do the watering. And for the leaves they are just brown. They come off very easy but they are not the dry colored brow. If you know what I mean.

The leaves coming off easily is a very good sign. A sick or dying tree is not usually able to form the callus that creates separation between the leaf and the branch. Don't give up yet! It sounds more like a seasonal effect than anything dire.

Michindi, remember I'm from NY so this may not be right for your tree buttttt......

Watering by schedule, in this case every day, can turn into overwatering. Water when the soil is drying out but not yet dry. Also I question the watering in the evening, I prefer morning watering, but will on super hot days need to water a second time in the evening, if the soil is dry.

Also I would check with the individual you obtained the tree from. He/she is much more likely to be able to help you, especially if you can bring the tree with you.

Remember. Elm's do need to drop old leaves and produce new ones, even growing in your climate. This may just be the tree going through a little cool weather dormancy. But either way, with less leaves the tree will need less water. Still checking the soil is the best way to know!

Michindi,
Hi there, glad to hear the tree is coming back. Question, the picture you show sure is of a healthy looking tree, but the time date on the picture is from a year and a half ago.

Is this just a case of the camera stamping the picture with an incorrect date? or is this a picture of the tree before its problems?
If so would love to see it now....

Either way, glad to hear it has recovered. We all lose (many many) trees, its good to hear when someone is able to bring one back.
