Maple Borer Problem
Hi there, a year ago I acquired a large maple stump from a relative's garden. It was about 30 years old. I cut it right back and sealed some of the larger wounds. The stump is about nine inches thick and a year later it has put on phenomenal growth. The only problem is there is something boring into some of the wounds and I don't know how to stop them.
Does anyone have some idea on how to stop this problem? I really don't want to lose this tree as it has great potential. Thanks for your help. |

Hi Birdman,
There is a good site here in Australia, if you follow this link http://www.treesrus.com.au/hints_pests.html it has a section on boreres and how to kill 'em. Basically they say "Borers - Borers often attack old, weakened or damaged shrubs and trees, entering the effected area. They tunnel into the plant leaving a mass of sawdust. Control: Best defense is to keep plants well fed and watered. Scrape away damaged bark and attempt to bring out the borers. More effective is to squirt a few drops of methylated spirits or kerosene into the borer tunnels and putty up the holes to prevent water entering." Make a link to that page though, it may be useful for other pests later Cheers, Pete Wilson-Jones |

Putty
BTW you can make a great putty by mixing red & green plasticine (children's putty) with a few drops of vegetable oil.

Lindane (Isotox) used to be sold for treating borers. It works well for me, particularly if you syringe it into the cavities. I'm not sure if it's still on the market, but you should be able to find something similar at your nursery.
Regards, Matt

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated (especially the handy link about pests).
I ended up finding some excellent borer treatment called BV2 Borer Spray. This instantly solved the problem. Thankfully the little critters only got into parts of the tree I will be removing shortly. Spring has now sprung here in New Zealand and this maple has gone crazy with growth. Shouldn't take long to get a fine large bonsai out of this one. Just a quick question while on the topic of maples - I am about to get hold of some Chisio maples (I really love their colour and leaf size). I have heard these are a very slow growing variety of maple but I will be planting them in open ground for at least three years. The trees will have roughly one inch trunks, and I would like to get them to about 3 inches. Does anyone have experience with this variety? Regards - Adrian. |
