Little Black Bugs

By Anonymous on Wednesday, December 6, 2000 - 06:59 pm:

Dear Dr. Bonsai,

I have just purchased a tree, I don't know much about bonsai. My problem is, I sem to have some Little black bugs hanging out in my tree. i have searched the web, and went to the libaray and I can't seem to find out what they are and how to correct the problem.

These bugs look like fruit flies and crawl around like spiders when they are not flying. I have a Juniper, and it is starting to dry out like crazy, I don't know what to do.

Please help

Confused

Re: Little Black Bugs

Dear Confused:

It definitely sounds like your tree is in need of some immediate attention. Junipers are tough little trees, but once they begin to show signs of stress (like brown tips and withered needles) the end is near.

Let's see what we can do. Take a 2-3 gallon bucket, and fill it completely with water. Add a single drop of dishwashing soap and mix thoroughly. Now immerse your entire tree in this bubble bath. An hour or so should be long enough to convince your gnats/mites to find another place to live.

After removing the tree, refill the bucket with clear water and have another 1/2 hour soak. Be sure to keep your juniper outdoors where it can get plenty of light and air. Many bug infestations result from being cooped up indoors where there are no natural controls.
