Lindane Alternatives?

Lindane has been suggested as a good pesticide against borers, but it has been banned many places due to its potential as a carcinogen and high toxicity to wildlife. From what I can discern, all effective measures and alternatives seem equally toxic.

One of my old collected pines has old borer holes. The tree is in fantastic health, and I want to keep it that way. As a precaution the holes were treated with lindane and injected epoxy into the teeny holes about 3 years ago. At the time we didn't have the burgeoning duck population we have now (I sometimes find duck nests in my over-wintering bed), so my tactics need to change.

I want to be armed in the event some other nasty gets the munchies for what is apparently a tasty tree. Has anyone had luck with less toxic alternatives for lindane?

Question Bump.....

I don't know either, but I'd like to know also. "Teacher" chains thru a list of 3 or 4 borer remedies (of generally lessening efficiency) and then gives up as the ones he likes have mostly been banned. I suspect there may not be a nice answer for us....What makes Lindane good against borers (sticks to trunk & doesn't wash off or break down & kills them....) also makes it bad for the environment & your ducks....

But I'd sure like to know what other people do now. Lost my first tree (little 'yamadori' black cherry - practice tree) to borers last year.
