leaf disease identification on my new Tamukeyama Laceleaf Japanese Maple
I bought a new Tamukeyama Laceleaf Japanese Maple last week. It is still in the the pot but I have been watering it as needed. I have it in a sunny location that is somewhat protected from wind. In the last few days I have begun to notice the east-facing leaves turning gray-green, then yellow and drying up. Not all the leaves are affected but I am concerned that the pant may have a fungal disease. If so, I will probably bring it back. The problem starts at almost the exact mid-point on the tops of the leaves, It starts out as a greening of the normally crimson-red leaves and then the greening areas turn yellow and become very dry. The veins in the greening leaves are more pronounced as they still look red against the green tissue. I will be able to send you a picture once my husband collects our digital camrea from my parents house where he forgot it, again
Any ideas? Thanks for your help! |

It could also perhaps be some sort of leaf burn? Was the tree perhaps kept under shadecloth before you bought it? The Japanese maples are much more sensitive to sunlight and wind, particularly if their leaves did not grow in the same condition as it now finds itself in.

I guess it could be leaf burn b/c the garden center has most of their plant area under cover. If I plant the maple in the sun will it eventually adjust to the new conditions or does it always have to be in part shade due to the way it was grown/kept?
Thanks, Heather |

I grow laceleaf maples in full shade and they do spectacular . . . you would be best served to plant your redleaf variety in part shade with morning sun and afternoon shade.
