Lavender Starflower & Bugs
I received a Lavendar Starflower (Grewia Occidentalis) as a Christmas gift. It is approx 8-10 year old. Recently it has become infested with some kind of a bug. I am trying to figure out what it is and how to treat it. As you can see in the picture they are small green waxy bumps on the leaves and branches. After a few days they turn into a white cottony worm shape bug. I do not see them move. I have been plucking them off one at a time, everyday. I was told they are Mealybugs, but everything I read about Mealybugs says they are white bugs...these start out green. Any help in determining what this is and how to treat is much appreciated. At one point this tree was beautiful with little flowers and plenty of leaves. Lately there are no flowers and the leaves are slowely turning yellow, drying up and falling off.

I can't make out too much in your picture, but that shell shaped object hanging updside down beneath the bud in the middle arrow is a Scale insect.

It looks like scale to me too, but I have never heard of scale producing worms that are obvious to the eye. There is a cottony scale. But once again, no obvious worms. Mealy bugs don't really look like worms, either. But they aren't usually white. The cottony stuff around them is white but I have seen the insects themselves as red or gray and, once again, they do not look like worms. When you get all of the cottony stuff off of them, they kind of look like a cross between aphids and pillbugs with legs. I don't know. Picking them off certainly doesn't hurt. Whatever they are. Try Neem but test it on a small portion of the plant before you spray the whole thing. I am not familiar with your plant and it might be sensitive to the spray.
