Question Jade(White Stuff)

Hey All,

I have this jade tree that I have had for about 5 months. Everything was fine till recently. I have noticed that underneath the leave's and some branch forks, that there is a white powdery substance. The bottom leaves on the branch's are the one's that are falling off. I have only moved the tree inside since is starting to cool off. It get plenty of light through a south facing window. I water when dry. I dont think it's anything serious, I would just like to fix this white powder problem. If anyone can help me that would be great. Sorry I can't post a pic.

Might be some kind of mildew. Don't water the leaves. Without a photo it's hard to say anything helpful.

Good luck,

Matt

Without a photo this is just a guess also...but Mealey bugs tend to love Jade. They would look like white spider-webs and small white/gray insects with a fuzzy appearance.

A picture would help.

hmmm. The solution there would probably be to wash the leaves thoroughly. So, I guess, if the problem gets worse with water it's potentially fungus, and if it gets better, it's potentially bugs!

Sorry I dont have a digi to post a pic. I'm not to worried yet, it doesnt seem to be hurting the tree, besides a couple fallen leaves. What does jade prefer on watering? I wait till my tree is dry and then water the next day. It seems too do okay. I completly soke the tree for a half hour in a bowl of water. If anyone has anything they can tell me about jade as bonsai that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

For Jade, waiting for dry soil should be fine, since it's a succulent. Most trees you would want to water before the soil is dryish, but this isn't really a tree. Half hour may be a bit long. Try a 1/4 hour, at least until you stop seeing bubbles rise to the surface. Tepid (room temperature) water should be good. I like to water through the soil occasionally too. Soaking is fine for ensuring that the water penetrates, but overhead watering helps flush out impurities in the soil and bring in oxygen.

Jade dislike overwatering and frost. Either one can lead to crown rot which is not a cool thing. You'll know when you have it because the plant falls over (thud!).

Regards,

Matt

Adam:
Don't water the jade plant any more than once every month when inside. I realize that sounds like not nearly enough. I brought my really big jade plant (I have several) inside in late September, and just watered it for the first time since it came inside. These plants are succulents and they store water in their trunks and leaves.

The white powder is a fungus. Get a fungicide for houseplants and use it as directed. If you catch it now the plant should recover in time. Again, do not over-water the plant or it will die.

Shower your jade after you spray it with fungicide. Make sure that no insecticide water goes through the soil.Jade's absorb things through their leafs. I sprayed once a jade and 3/4 of its leaves fell off. Also, remember that they are very fragile and don't like sudden changes of anykind. Oh yeah, and i don't really think that they should be left for 1 month without water. I have a jade in a medium-small pot and the soil dries up after 4-5 days.
