Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

Just found some (actually alot) of Woolly adelges on my Hemlock trees (the big yard type). Is there any concern for my Bonsai. At this time I have no Hemlock Bonsai. Also is this aphid a problem to other types of trees? I plan on spraying wit Malathion this weekend if I do not get any advise otherwise!
Thanks....Jay with all kinds of little white dots on my Hemlock

Re: Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

Other trees are bothered by adelgids but they all seem to have their own special versions. I have not seen where the hemlock adelgid is a danger to anything else. But I also have not seen where Malathion will work on them, either. These are much harder to get rid of than your run of the mill aphid. Many of the chemicals that are used successfully on adelgids are only used by licensed arborists. The two insecticides I have listed are endosulfan (Thiodan) and Merit. I do not know if those are available to the homeowner where you live. Timing of spraying is also important for hemlocks. Usually when new tip growth is expanding. That is when the eggs have hatched and the crawlers are on the move and vulnerable to sprays. If those were my trees, I would call an arborist (get references).
