Help with diseased Elm!
I was wondering if any one might be able to help me identify a disease that my Elm has caught. About a month ago I started noticing what looks somewhat like anthracanose on a newly purchased Elm. As soon as I noticed the diseased leaves the tree started to totally defoiliate itslef. I thought this was natural because I just got the tree from Florida and I live in Jersey and the tree was putting out new leaves directly below the leaves that were dropping. I thought the tree was acclimating to it's new environment and just adjustinmg to my growing season. Now I'm extremely concerned because I noticed the disease is coming back on some leaves and the tree is totally defoiliating itself again, for the second time in one month and there seems to be no signs of leaves to replace the ones that are dropping. If any one can has a clue what this disease could be or any advice on what to do(I have been treating it with sulfur fungicid since day one) please let me know. Thanks

Bart, thanks, it looks like it could be so many things it kinda looks like, anthracanose, but could be corynespora leaf spot or maybe erwinia leaf spot or maybe even some sort of blight. Alot of leaf spots that I've seen are either speckled spots or it affects the tips or part of the leaves, this seems to affect the whole leaf. What ever it is it has defoliated my elm twice in one month. I've sprayed it with sulfur once a week. I would spray it with Ortho's disease control but it is a systemic, which I've heard is a no,no for elms. It seems like alot of trees live with diseases and only show signs during favorable conditions and alot are not fatal to the tree, this seems to be taking my tree out quick.

may be dutch elm disease
It looks like dutch elm disease. A good systematic fungicide will take care of it. You may need to spray more than once over the course of the spring/summer to fully get rid of it. The fungus devopes quickly when the weather is warm and damp. Does your elm leaves start to turn color at the tips of the branch then die all the way down the branch stem? It looks alot like what happen to one of my elms.

Any word on what disease your elm caught - your photos look exactly what our tree is ailing from?

That looks like Black Spot to me, a fungal disease that effects tender growth in the spring, particularly during damp weather. I have one that gets this in the spring. Try not to wet the foliage when you water this tends to spread the fungus. I also shelter the tree early in the season when rain is predicted. Remove the effected leaves and discard in the trash, don't just toss them on the ground. When I see this I spray with a fungicide containing Daconil. I have read that Chinese Elms can be damaged by certain sprays but this one has never damaged my tree. Remember though that this will not cure already infected leaves but is intended as a preventative to check the spread of the fungus. Norm |
