help!!
Hey, I have had my bonsai for five months now with no problems at all... but now I think that there is some sort of pest plaguing it. About a week ago I noticed that some of the new leaves either had huge chunks missing from them or had fallen off. I thought that this was my cat eating it, and moved the tree to a place where the cats couldn't reach it. Now (1 wk later) a bunch of the new shoots are dying, and more and more of the leaves are being eaten. A few of the older leaves are also starting to fall off for no apparent reason. I really love my tree and don't want it to die on me!! Is there anyone who might know what's bothering it? Oh yeah, it's a boxwood Thanks!!Lary ![]() |

Re: help!!
Hi Larissa,
I hope you have the tree outside? What may be happening is that the buds have been eaten a bit and when the leaves grow out they show the marks. There's also the possibility that you have some chewing insects like caterpillars, slugs or snails gnawing at your tree. The older leaves can be expected to shed somewhat. The important thing is that the new growth remains, and it sounds like you do have a problem. If the tree is outside, take a walk outside at night with a flashlight and check under the bench and pots for slugs. Regards, Matt

Re: help!!
Actually, just check under the pot itself to look for slugs. Or put a half grapefruit rind face down near the plant. Slugs love that. Then just pick them up and throw them in a pail of soapy water. Or (my favorite) cut them in half. Where do you live? Do you have a problem with root weevils where you are? Could be those. It is the adult form of those that eat the leaves and they only come out at night. So, Matt's suggestion of checking the plant at night is a real good one. Oh, and before I forget, snails. Just slugs with a mobil home. Same same. But is the damage to the leaves nicely made notches or is it just pure devastation? Do you live somewhere where there are caterpillars out and about? Could be those, too. More info please...........
