Question Grasshoppers eating my elms!

Theres a colony of grasshoppers that have decided to camp out my cork bark elm stock. Anyone try Neem Oil that Matt suggested on elms? If not I will be the first.

Or any other suggestions?

Do I see a FAQ photo in the making, or what?

Any chance you have a closeup where we can see the evil grin on his face? This was as close as I could get.

Neem oil is supposed to be good against these beasts. Makes the foliage taste bad.

Regards,

Matt

Cute little guy. I haven't a clue about the Neem but Treebay usually knows what he is talking about. Otherwise, I would advise spraying with carbaryl (Sevin). I do not usually advise using a "hard" chemical but all I have listed for use on grasshoppers is carbaryl or malathion. Trials done by different universities have leaned toward the carbaryl. If you do use the carbaryl, be sure to use it when there are not a lot of bees around (i.e., early in the morning) because this stuff is highly toxic to bees and there is a shortage of bees already. Not a good thing for fruit growers, if you follow.

dude, those aren't grasshoppers, they are locusts, and a sure sign that the end of the world has begun and it has started on your bonsai. Congratulations.

The funny part is I watched this one grow up over a few weeks. As you can see in the picture his antenna are shorter then the normal hopper. This is because I cut them with my shears hoping that this would disorient it when I relocated this fellow to the other side of the house. But to my dispair he found his way back!

Grasshopper control has been an on again / off again issue at my home. I try to follow this guy's advice when it comes to general home lawn and gardening:
www.dirtdoctor.com
He beleives in a 100% organic approach and has a local radio show here in the Dallas area.
