Gophers!
A gopher has found its way into my growing grounds. I've seen some of these pocket gophers go after hyacinth bulbs and the like, but I had no idea they have an appetite for field-grown crabapple bonsai. >
![]() Last Friday I saw one of these leaning at a strange angle with some furrowing around it. I thought it might be my imagination, maybe pruning left over from fall, but today there was a second. When I reached down to straighten the plant, it pretty much came out in my hand. Chewn off at the roots. These aren't tiny trees either. The root base was around 3-4 inches.Since the plants haven't leafed out yet, there's a good chance that if I just cut the roots cleanly and replant (or repot!) them, they will do just fine. But this unintended pruning is not what i had in mind. Too bad gophers don't have a taste for olive, or I might be able to get them a job at Rip's place. Regards, Matt

Re: Gophers!
Matt, unlike moles gophers are very easy to trap. They're really, really stupid. Get yourself a couple of cinch traps and have at 'em.
