Hi guys
sorry about the mass load of questions... but hey, im really learning here. =)) i think my Chinese elm is affected by some sort of fungus, which was from either the caterpillar or aphids... theyre gone now...but the tree looks a bit stale... some of the bad leaves ive pruned off... and here is an attatchment of them... i am confused whats wrong with the leaves...hopefully someone here does know... some, tips are brown and some are yellowing with brown...and im looking some pictures online and it might be called "Black Blotches" or leaves affected by aphids lose thier nutrition and come out yellowing. let me know guys... i want to go out and get a fungicide spray bottle...because this is getting worse.... ive cut off all the leaves that look like this....the tree looks like crap now with that many missing leaves... thanks |

RELAX, sit back, take a breath...
You've had this tree for what, a week? Some trees react to changes in thier enviroment by loosing leaves, thats pretty normal. A pain in the butt, but normal. Yours had aphids, and to me the yellowing you are seeing looks just like aphid damage. Insect damage can take a few days to show, so I think your tree will be fine if you dont kill it by over-treating it! Trees are on a different timeline than you're used to dealing with, it can take a few WEEKS for things to reach a 'status quo' after something like a move, or an aphid attack. Its POSSIBLE something else is going on, so keep an eye on your watering and dont overwater, and make sure it doesnt cook. Right now you're stressing it MORE with every treatment you throw at it. Let it recover from the aphid damage and the move, then re-evaluate to see if there's something else going on. PATIENCE GRASSHOPPER! RELAX......... Maryjane AKA Weeble |

Rofl!
ill show u grass hopper! well mainly my question wasnt answered yet...what kind of fungicide do people use here for thier bonsai? well yeah i guess im kinda worried, i just didnt wana lose it. you see, this is the problem when people say "read, read, read" and all ive been doing is reading, and looking at nasty foliage pictures. and obviously, it gets me even more worried from anxiety. well lets hope its nothing else. because yellowing foliage apparently can mean several things, root rot...fungi, etc etc. anyhow, you might be right Weebs...about the leaves all of a sudden turning into that colour, which is probable from a delayed reaction from the aphid attack. i didnt know it could take days for the leave to show the symptoms. i have plucked nearly 100 leaves now...lol... what should i do? water it a bit less due to loss of foliage?.. well ill relax....since u were right about everything else i ever asked u. ill keep an eye on it and keep u guys posted thanks! |

elm leaf yellow and brown
ELM TREE
hay there i think it may be a australian thing , 1/why becouse my tree last year went all yellow and brown looked like it was going to die ,there was a bug on it this year and samt thing happen 2/ we have very hot winds hear 30 deg to 40 degs at times 3 I am thing it must be a time of year thing the elms i have with full sun,and protected from winds did get some yellow leafs but are going well now ,no die back 4/ the other trees elms had a bug and went yellow and brown, looked like die back on 3 bottom branches change of colour in branch , looked dead , I think this was the bugs but , i think the yellow leafs and brown leafs are a wind thing where most trees get brown yellow tips on leafs i think the elms take it harder and go yellow, brown all over, I was thing it was a defect in the trees , but i looked at my records off last year and the some thing happen to the elm tree last year some time, may be a defect , may be the bugs , but i think its the wind the hot dry winds we get hear, If any 1 know difrent plz let me know , hold in there i think it will come back , if there are not to many leafs i would say keaps you eyes out at watering time , you dont want root rot , what say u all ?i would say dont cut back tree yet , time is a friend to your tree , and hast can hurt your tree more then heat, bugs and some on, but spray the tree for bugs if need be , I think it will come back :} I am jack of all trades and a master off nun |

yeah i think its just die back from the aphid attack or the rotten caterpillars.... and it took a few days within that week for the leaves to respond due to the loss of nutrients. today the tree seems ok... i think it isnt the heat cause ive been watering it twice a day... soil looks good... if it doesnt i might have to take it into a nursery and give it a First aid treatment.. |

I doubt this is from an aphid attack. For that much damage, the aphids would have to be carpeting the plant. Aphids also generally attack NEW growth and shoots, not old leaves or tougher woody growth. Typically, older leaves, as these are, remain unaffected, unless the aphids are so thick they look like woolen mittens on the ends of shoots.
More likely this has to do with placement of the tree and watering. Since you've had it only a few days, the tree is most likely acclimating itself to its new surroundings. It may have been kept in a brighter location before you bought it and now is in a place where it doesn't get as much light. In a less bright location, it cannot sustain as much foliage and is "self pruning." That's pretty typical behavior for many species. This could also be helped along by overwatering --which is a common cause for yellowing foliage on chinese elms. You have to take a step back and let things be for a while. Make sure the soil approaches dryness (dry half an inch down or so into the soil) and then water thoroughly. Also you have to get past the notion that a tree is going to look presentable ALL the time. They will not. Expecting them to be in constant "show" shape leads to overcare and alot of problems. Every bonsai goes through ungainly, unnattractive phases, as well as phases where they can be spectacular. |
