Fungus problem

Well, I don't know wether it is a problem or a feature. I don't know much about trees, so here my question goes...

One of my favorite trees has some fungus over it, it is a grey/green fungus, as the one that grows over the pines in the forest, so I don't know what to do, should I fight it (how?) or should I leave it there?, it obviously makes the tree look older, but I'm affraid that it might stop it's development... well, I would like to send you a pic, but because of the res. of my cam, I can't...

Then, on the soil of other pot, it's growing some green fungus, I know it is because it has too much water and sunlight, but the tree demands it... does it is appreciated or should I fight it? (how?)

Re: Fungus problem

Hmm. Does the green fungus look like hornwort or liverwort?

Type either of those names into the search engine over at bonsaiTALK Links and then let us know. If it is, the soil is much too wet.

Re: Fungus problem

I found them similar to "Subclass Metzgeriidae (Simple Thalloid Liverworts)" in the links... I know I'm overwatering, but we're having really high temperatures, and I have to go the whole day out, so I don't want them to burn in the sun (it happened one day) so I pour a little too much water on them (specially the seedling growns)

Re: Fungus problem

Maybe it is a lichen and not a liverwort? *Lichens would be growing on the trunk and have a dull texture and probably be light green or yellowish green. *Liverwort would be green and slimy looking and be collecting in the soil (probably not the tree itself at first) in the areas that remain most damp.

IF IT IS LICHEN - probably no big deal. *Just don't let it take over. *It does feed on the bark to some extent, but its presence doesn't represent any cultural abnormality - like overwatering or something like that. *You could brush the bark lightly with a plasic toothbrush if the growth gets too dense. *On trees like pine and others with rough bark, you'll want to be careful not to dislodge the bark in doing this.

IF IT IS LIVERWORT or HORNWORT - *Clear it away from the soil and see if you can't get the temperatures down by some means. The evaporation from the soil *may keep the roots from cooking, but it isn't a good situation. *Most trees shut down when the temperatures get that high.

Maybe you could do something about the temperature?

1) How about shadecloth? *Maybe something removable so that you can get it out of the way?

2) Or maybe some *"Mister cool stuff" for evaporative cooling at ***CHARLEY*** *It's part number 6066

Regards,

Matt

Re: Fungus problem

It sounds like the easiest fix would be to get those plants some shade. What kind of trees are these?

Re: Fungus problem

well, but they are tropical trees, love to be out in the heat... but, it is gone now... thanks anyway... I just cutted back a little water, and that was all, by now the weather has changed, we now have rain, so what I need for them is a roof...
